This is a photo from this past summer. i had pretty much given up on the hope that he'd ever be much of a flyer; but now that all of his flights are in he's practicing a lot more, with great and obvious pleasure - which of course is very reinforcing for me as well. This weekend will be Zazu's first year anniversary with me; he's three and a half. He's really blossomed - not that he was ever really cagebound, but he'd spent so much time in cages he was very clumsy, constantly falling off of his gym and pathetically terrified of trees, and other insecurities. i can't tell how nice it is to see him glow with self-confidence after a short-hop flighted recall: he always wants to give a kiss or roll onto his back for a tummy tickle - it seems the more freedom he learns to negotiate, the more bonded we become... it's a huge thrill see this big boy sailing toward me, now that he's finally growing "majestic."

...but I have to say I'm a little uncertain about the idea of having a not-highly-competent flyer outside unrestrained. Do you worry that he'll fly into a tree and not know how to get down?

And yes I remember saying the same thing about JT and Bean, and my concerns were apparently baseless that time... :-)

Hi Nate, it's a very valid concern, moreso now. i was pretty comfortable over the summer since Zazu was very reluctant to test his wings and has always been very much a velcro bird with me, so we did a lot of outdoor acclimating and tree-climbing. Maybe you remember JT being mildly appalled that i was actually putting Zazu up in trees and having him practice getting back down to me :) i kind of worried i was was being overly reckless at that point too.

i still think owners of flighted macaws have to make peace with trees as a very big and important fact of their bird's life. i didn't really know what macaws are all about until i saw my goofy, gaudy, noisy boy literally disappear into the pine needles, so quiet that i wouldn't have known he was there except for the twigs he tossed after nibbling them. It was humbling to watch his instincts kick in.

So, to answer your question (finally): yes, it's a risk that i'm trying to address. We aren't doing much outside these days beyond just a quick walk around, but as the weather gets nicer i'll go back to flydown practice from gradually increasing heights. By continuing to work outside daily i hope to minimize panic situations. Zazu has a great recall and, like Bean, he always tries to get back to me.

So, i wouldn't say your concerns are baseless, but rather i'm perhaps resigned to the possibility. i have the number of a local tree-trimmer who's had some good experience with other parrots in trees, a poster in case Zaz gets lost (heaven forbid) and honestly i worry more about power lines and traffic - at least if he's in a tree i know he's safe-ish for the moment. Truth be told, i guess i didn't really think he'd get to this point, and he's so happy i don't feel i could turn back. How can i help him learn what he needs to learn?Working with Mouse has led me to feel pretty strongly that it's critical that the bird be comfortable with the outside world... and your thoughts, comments, questions, challenges etc are always much appreciated!

With you on the traffic, etc. After watching Bean fly all over the new place and seeing how he half hazardly changed directions I really worry about the road out front. So far he has been ok but man they can get moving pretty good.

Hey JT! During the summer Zazu and i spent a little time just hanging out on the front porch, watching street- and foot-traffic go by. It was a nice little socializing exercise for Zaz since everyone who walked by wanted to come over and meet him. Hopefully the more familiar he is with his neighborhood the more likely he'll have his brain engaged in flight...
i've learned a ton reading about Bean's adventures; i guess i think of Zaz as sort of following in Bean's "footsteps" or "wingbeats" or something like that....

Sounds like he is getting familiar with thr road. We just moved and our road is very busy. I usually work with Bean in the back yard but as he showed me he can quickly get off track. He did a few figure 8's in the front last time he flew. He did seem to stay back from the road. Not sure if that was on purpose.

Have either of you had any luck with harnesses?

I was taking Phoebe out for just a walk around when she had that overnighter last summer and came back with clipped wings. I'm about to resume working on harness training with her (astute readers may note that I've said that before) in hopes of not losing her again. Even if she can't get into trees while she's out that way, I think the exposure to the outdoors will do her a lot of good.

In other news, I stood atop a hill in a public park today and it hit me for the first time that being on a hilltop is probably a really good way to get into free flight. They can take off and fly up, and still see you in any direction. It's what Dean & friends are doing in CO, so I'm not saying this is original thinking, just that I never 'got it' til now. No guarantees of course, but I'm sure it would be better than when Phoebe flew off, where she was out of sight almost instantly, and was circling above treetops where she had to (didn't) descend a quite a bit to get back to me.

Never tried harnesses. I read about people's use of them on freeflight list. Just seems like asking for trouble to me. A bird on a string is something that I can't seem to imagine.

Like the big open hill thing. The playground was the closest I got to that but not big by any means.

Zazu came to me with a really rotten attitude toward harnesses - his previous owner had no clue about positive reinforcement and tried to get him into one by force. i did try very hard to change his mind about it and we actually made some progress, but it was probably the most mind-numbingly tedious training ever, and i haven't worked on it for awhile.

i think a harness might be very useful under some circumstances, but like JT, i've worried about what happens if a panicked bird hits the end of the tether. It might be good for Zaz (if i could get him into one) in new/unfamiliar areas, but he's reasonably confident and safe in his own back yard, having gotten acclimated when his wings were clipped.

i love the idea of flying from hilltops. i'll try to post a photo of the area where i hope to fly Zazu (and possibly Pongo U2) - it's perfect from that standpoint.
