Max (my grey) is coming with me to Costa Rica this december. My dopey ass forgot that she needs to get used to the carrying case she's gonna be in order to reduce the amount of stress she has to deal with. So I'm leaving in 2 weeks, and I wanted to know if anyone had any tips.

What I'm currently doing is having the case next to her cage with some of her fravorite things on it. I have some food on there, which I from time to time will reach over grab some and give to her. She does eat it which is a positive step. Also a ball of paper. She like to just rip those apart, but she hasn't made any attempt to reach for it yet.

She gets extremely jumpy when she's on my should and we come anywhere near the case, so I know she's still a bit uneasy about it. I hope 2 weeks is gonna be enough time for her to get comfy with the idea of the case.

What's the closest she will get to the cage without being frightened?

Small steps are very helpful... have you tried putting her food on top of the cage, and feeding her on top of the travel cage for a few days? If you're feeding her beside the cage, move the food bowl progressively closer to the cage teach day until she's right next to it. Then move it inside, but keep it right next to the door, and don't close the door.

I had trouble getting Darwin into his travel cage at first, but that changed after a few days of feeding him inside that cage - I'd put the food in, and he'd follow it in. He wasn't very afraid of it though, just didn't want to go inside.

And, always reward your bird for going into a cage, whether it's a travel cage or a regular cage or a sleeping cage or whatever. That will help prevent them from becoming reluctant in the future.

I always leave the "scary" object (whatever it is) within sight of my Grey and within walking distance of her and then I distract her with something she likes or wants. Eventually she'll get bored with me and after a few minutes, she usually sneaks up on the "scary" thing to explore it. After a few sessions like this she gets used to it. I have to do this will all of her new toys.
