Oscar's Third 10 ft. flight ()

I am holding holding Oscar and getting him to fly for his third flight. Note the clipped portion of the wings yet to fill in. He is still able to fly 40 feet high!

Hmm, guess movies don't show up in latest?

40 feet eh? Guess you now know why people lose birds who have clipped wings.

Just be careful with O and "making him fly". Let him do it on his own. Please note I am not criticising just pointing out.

As I remember you have a park behind you yes?

Asking O to fly in such a confined space would be a challenging task for even a wild fledged bird. Was O fledged? I have read and enjoy all your postings.

There is some info somewhere on this sight that I haven't seen elsewhere. It is mechanics of birds and some comments of birds lungs.

A birds lung cage does not expand like ours. It is rigid not flexible. It does have some expansion. Very little though. Start watching O at the pelvis bone. You will see a little in and out from breathing.

For general purpose it takes an avid flyer 3xflight time to recover. So if the flight was 30 seconds give the bird 90 to recover. But watch the pelvis and wait for O to stop breathing heavily there, that will be your only indication.

Remember they are pros at hiding EVERYTHING, except screaming - heh.

So O has been 40 feet up? How far did he fly distance wise?

Have you been working on recall?

Like I have said I have read all your posts and I don't remember all of it.

We have a yard that is say 700 feet long and 200 feet wide. When Bean goes for it he either flies through or over the 60' trees lining the perimeter. In a matter of 20-30 seconds he was 100' in the air and navigating the ROAD in front and the LAKE in back.

He was turning as tight as I would imagine he could at the speed he was going. He was in "second gear" do a search for that here - I wish I was more organized and could provde them. You will see 2nd gear in Nate's posting of the falcon? eagle? groundbreaking movie he just posted.

If you haven't joined the yahoo freeflight group it is a must. Met Nate there and came here too. It is a lot to weed through. Even if you only read the "SO AND SO FLEW AWAY" you will learn tons!

So Bean bolted one day - my fault having noisy blower going. He flew to me with the thing on. But while he might like to MAKE noise he doesn't want to hear it. So he bolted off my shoulder and went full speed downslope towards the lake. He realized something (would like to thjing water-can't swim!) and tried to turn around. He was flying into the wind. Not sure how there was a wind coming off the cool lake. It was a gusty day though. Next thing I kno he is up 100'+. He made two big very tigh circles. I say tight for the speed he was going.

I fly RC planes and it was very tight. I would say 100'. He was worn out and headed towards the neighbors deck OR roof where he has been before.

I should have dropped everything and kept full eye on him. I of course didn't. I was watching him thinking he knows where to go.

Went looking for him and spent half an hour. I was relaxed but worried I couldn't find him.

I kept up with the leaf blowing and half an hour later BEANER comes WALKING throught the barrier foliage right on up to me.

Now get this. Bean tolerates me because he knows I am a source of food and comfort. But I am the hardest on him for rules. He has skin condition so he picks at his feet. The more stressed he gets the more he picks. So it is a delicate balance. I don't give him an inch. The boys (JT 7, Ty 4) will occasionally back me up when I am not looking. My wife does also but not as much.

Bean flies to my wife every chance he gets. She will brush him off 20% of the time I will. If I am cooking Bean gets brushed off every time. BUT he still tries.

I am the only one the flys him outside. I am not the only one that takes him outside. My wife takes him out on the deck very often. He flys back and forth to her and the perch when she shoos him off. This happens maybe 20 times during dinner.

I don't want to hijack your post so I will copy the first part of this and post it as a journal entry.

Watching this video made me realize all the little details I never commented about before.

Keep us posted please! We as a grou can learn more than imaginenable!
