Does it take any extra training to teach pigeons to come home to roost at night, or is that just something they do naturally? Are there extra steps you take when releasing them for the first few times, to help ensure that they all come back?

Some of it is natural, but what we do is put them in a cage and let them see out side for the first three days. That way they will learn where the landing board is to come back inside. This will teach them but they have to learn the rest on thier own. Sometimes you will loose babies when doing this, but the majority of babies will learn to come home. It also helps to have adults that have all ready done this that way they can help them find thier way back home.

Do you ever teach them to come to you on cue?

Sorry I have been training all week, and sometimes the weather is bad so we have to keep a closer eye on our babies. I have two adult breeders that will come when we call them mostly at feeding time or when they think its feeding time lol. One is called Suzy Q, and the other is called Morning Star both are females the males will not come to land on you but will come to look to see what you might have for them.

I rescue Pigeons here in the Twin Cities area, My Sanctuary currently has close to 30 Pigeons, Homers,Owls,Figuritas,Dunn Lahore, some can no longer fly.
I placed my young birds in a cage and sat the in the middle of the back yard for afew hours everyday 2 weeks later I opened the loft and allowed them free flight, they came in on there own at dusk.
A month later I began to take them in carriers about 20 miles away and release, they were home long before I, then I took them out in a different direction the next day and again they beat me home, then I took them 40 miles away and simply repeated the process.
I am not a breeder but sometimes I allow my birds to have little ones.
I do not race either.
I rescue and protect Pigeons, you can learn more about me on pigeonrescue.com
