I have a really important question to ask...I hane a set of parakeets, one is 10 yrs old and tha male is 6 yrs. old////
Last night While I was sleeping I heard them ruffling around (yes, they and my other birds sleep with me) so I got up, turned on the light and seen that my male was haveing trouble balancing....At firdt I thought maybe he pulled his tail out grooming himself but it is all there...I can't explain he just looses balance....I am extremly worried about him and plan to take him to the vet tomorrow,,,If anyone has ever dealt with this please respond. he also has been plucking at his behind under the tail

I am also new this evening. I also enjoy bringing Gabe under the covers but I'm always concerned about injuring him. I know it's obvious but I would still be concerned especially with it's size. If a tail feather got stuck under something and pinned him for awhile then I would imagine it would have him compromised. But again that was obvious and I'm sure you ruled that out. I will look for your follow up tomorrow and hope all is well.

On a lighter note, as I hope this brings a smile or a laugh. This morning as I laid in bed with Gabriel and he was cuddled against my chest and we were snoozing, all the sudden the corner support of my bedframe gave way and the entire corner of the bed crashed down. A very startling moment even though it presented no danger. The noise it created was quickly followed by a startled outburst from Gabe. He maintained his position against me though as is his security. Well you can combine the 2 cliches to paint the moment when I decided it was time to get up later. 'Never let them see you sweat' & 'it scared the ?&%$& out of him' Although he maintained his calm and disposition he apparently let loose under the covers and decorated in a southerly direction. I could only laugh, a practice I get better at every day.

Out of the blue seeming to loose balance or fall off the perch?

our Bean did this and it was an indication of a foot problem.

He did not pick though. I'm not sure a pulled tail feather would make him like that but it is possible.

Get him to the vet.

Please let us know what's up.

Birds have fine balance even without thier tail feathers, in the wild they have to be able to escape from danger even if they get yanked out. TAKE HIM TO THE VET ASAP!!!!! There are many desieses and poisionings that start out with a bird not being able to keep thier balance the feet just wont work right. My first bird, the was my baby, ended up dieing after 6 days, we thought she was going through one of her ege phases, howevere, by the time we relized something was really wrong she died. When they autopsied her she had heavy metal poisioning, it came from our new house that we had just moved into a month earlier, it turned out that the former owner had had Terminex not only treating the outside but the inside to, and we didn't know this. This was 4 years ago and I still miss her deeply, I lost my first child.

I hope it is nothing serious but never take a chance when a bird is not acting normal, find a good vet that knows birds, thier hard to find but when you find one they usually are the best vsts around and know and care about birds. My vet nolong takes new people, however, as long as we as former clients have birds he will see them. I'm always calling and asking question on my birds health and he is very willing to answer them. They get anual physicals too. And he has helped us set up proper nutritious diets for them all.
