Well it is two weeks away and we are ready. Our older babies are flying very well together and we know we have a shot this year. I'll let you know how they do and if we win or not.

How long are the races? I mean in miles (or km) and in hours.

Nate it is hard to put it in hours. The race has five diffrent stages one is 50 then the other is 75 and so on. Then we start the long distant races the first of these are about 150 miles and then the last is a little over 300 miles. You will by then know if any of your birds will do well in this or if you have to drop out due to the safety of your birds. Thanks for asking this question.

When a race is held, do all of the participants bring their birds to a single starting location, and the birds race to their respective homes?

Is there a handicapping system to accomodate for people who live closer to / further from the starting point?

All breeders in clubs go to the pre picked points and release there birds. A clock is used at all the lofts to count and read the race bands used by the birds. We then take them back to the club and a winner is announced. There are no hady caps and we have been trying to get one, but with out any luck. We have people that have been racing for over 30 years and they don't want anything to change.

The first race where our loft is is about 20 miles shorter then the president of the clubs loft. You can guess who wins most of the races if not at least 90% of them. We do it for fun not the money only but others take it more then just fun and those you have to watch out for they will use any means to win even cheat.

There is 100 200 400, 600 mile races, and the Racing Pigeon world is full of folks claiming to love there birds then turn around and cull them, and if you aren't familar with the word cull, it means KILL.
Pigeons that are to big are culled, black tounges, to small, and the list goes on and on, those that can't sleep after snaping there birds neck simply don't train there birds then enter them into long distance races knowing they can't find there way home, this is called basket culling, this adds to the feral populations then we all know what happens next, mass poisonings of the bird of peace, Pigeon Racing should be abolished...its a evil sport full of evil people..bottom line
