We got a tree log and drilled holes all around about 1 to 1 1/4" deep with a hook on the top to hang it. We mix 1 cup of each of the cheapest peanut butter (dollar store) with corn meal, rolled oats, shortening, handful of wild bird seed, walnuts chopped or other nuts you have...sunflower seeds etc., raisins if you like. Mix it together and refrigerate until it is easier to handle. We mash the mixture into the holes in the log and hang it outside. The birds will be hanging on to the poles waiting to get a place in line.
After a couple of years, the log got so saturated with grease from the shortening and peanut butter, we added some perches because the outer layer of the tree was long gone and the bird couldn't hang on. That did the trick. Now all sizes of birds can come to the log. They get lots of protein and nourishment from this mixture and they LOVE it! We keep it up all year long.
The squirrels love it too and I read someplace that if you add chili powder to the suet mixture they wouldn't raid the log. We tried that and boy, you would have thought we opened up a new Mexican restuarant. More birds than ever came to dine and it didn't bother the squirrels a bit. We still have to shoo them off the log. We don't add it anymore because it didn't do the job to keep the squirrels off the log.
Anyway, I guarantee you will love watching all the birds come and enjoy this mixture.
