hey all,

i am interested in meeting some bird owners or breeders in the area (or do a little traveling) to get to know more about larger birds as pets and gather more first hand experience before i get one. so far green cheek conures are of interest, but i'm not strictly limited to that particular breed.

i'm aware of the amount of work and dedication, and i think that this is the next step towards making a true decision. if anyone is willing to help, or even point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,

steve

Hi, Steve - we 'spoke' earlier about your choice of birds. I'm in Brattleboro, VT, just off exit 1 of I91, @ 2 hours from Boston (rt 2 to 91) and you're welcome to come and meet the crew any time. I know there's a really active shelter/rescue in Billerica called Beaks and Noses that has birds of all kinds for 'adoption' there is an adoption fee. I believe there's another large rescue group in Greenfield. You can look them up in www.petfinder.com as well as other shelters and rescue groups in MA. I'm not necessarily suggesting you get a bird from them, but a visit might introduce you to a number of different birds, without a salesman's or breeder's pitch and push to buy. There's an active group in New England, Birds of a Feather (www.boaf.com) that has a list of breeders of all species throughout MA, CT, NH, VT, ME. The list might not be completely up to date, but the breeders are really helpful in guiding you to the breed of bird that would suit you and your lifestyle best. Good luck, and let us know about your bird when you get one.

great! thanks, Sarah. i think i'll take you up on that offer if it's honestly not a hassle for you. i've got a short list of breeders to expand on and a few local places to check out as well the BOAF website.

what's the best way to get in touch with you?

Call me - (802) 251-0492, or e-mail helloshera@yahoo.com and it's no problem. I've used/met/spoken to many breeders from BOAF. They've all been really really nice and really really helpful. I'm sure if you called any of them simply to discuss how their bird breeds would fit into your lifestyle, they'd be more than happy to help.

Just got an email from a BOAF breeder - he replied to my mail from last November. He's got two Meyers Parrot babies available. I mailed him back that I already got my little girl (see my pix - she's almost ready to come home). You might want to google the Meyers Parrot on line to see if this is a breed you'd be interested in. He's asking $400 (probably close to the price for the Jenday), and I think he's not far from Boston. You can contact him rogerhamelin@comcast.net
