Hi all,

I have a new rainbow lorikeet called Dee, and Dee has been with the family for a week now which isn't long.

When I brought Dee home he was very keen to spend time with people and had aleady learn't the basics. As such my girlfriend spent *lots* of time with Dee, if anything he has been spoilt for attention.

However - we are now finding Dee wants to stay in his cage and starts to get a little narky when we go to take him out of it. When out of his cage he wants to go back and demonstrated this by stretching in the direction of his cage and eventually trying to fly there.

I know - a week isn't long. At this point I'm putting it all down to ajustment issues as Dee hasn't had long to get to know the family and to ajust to his new home. I would be interested in any other thoughts people may have on this.

Cheers
Jason.

If he'd rather be in his cage than out of it, there's likely to be something about being out of his cage that he doesn't like. Maybe he was getting too much attention and didn't like it? Keep his cage door open as much as you can, and let him come out when he's ready. Try luring him out with food too, so he gets the idea that good things happy when he steps out of his cage.

Also check the "articles" section of this web site, there's a bunch of stuff in there, particularly under the "training" area, that will help you (re)build a good relationship where the bird wants to be with you because being with you is fun. The "taming" article is probably worth reading as well - even though it sounds like your bird is pretty tame, the basic ideas still apply.
