Teaching Tricks
Does anyone have any suggestions on recall training for my Sam, African Grey, 5 years old in December? I'm new to all of this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Nate will step in here and give you the links.
Read the flying stuff at
www.thepiratesparrot.com
and join the freeflight list at yahoo groups too.
If you are not clicker training start doing so, that helps. Find a favorite food that is small. I use Almond bits for Bean our
MM
. I haven't found something for our new foster Mozart who doesn't really like nuts.
You want to get to the point where everytime they come to you they get a treat (one reason why to keep the treat small). This can include just stepping up for starters.
So I take it you are letting Sam's wings grow out and they have been clipped up until now?

Well, I just noticed that the "articles" page is broken... I will see if I can fix that tomorrow. Meantime, this page will take you to a few articles on training in general, plus a couple of articles (near the bottom of the page) that are all about recall and fly-to-perch training:
http://www.featherforum.com/article/training
Basically the key things are:
1) find a treat your bird likes
2) reward the bird for stepping onto your hand (or from your hand to a perch)
3) do that several times
4) hold your hand just a little further away and repeat
5) several times :-)
6) hold your hand just out of reach, so the bird has to hop to make it over
7) and just keep extending the distance until the bird is flying to you from one room to another...
But read the articles, there's a lot more detail that should be helpful.
And if you have any questions, just ask. :-)

Hello I am new to owning a bird. I just recently got a very well looked after, affectionate 5 year old lovebird. He knows a few things like kissing, purring, and loves to get head rubbs. I have heard about clicker training, but know nothing about how to do this, although I am very interested. Could you tell me how to get started? What can you teach them with a clicker?
