I happened to be watching a show on dog training. The theme was being calm assertive and then presenting dominance traits. Well, I have still been having a small problem with Oscar wanting to bite me. I have had him 15 months. There is only my partner that shares our home and Oscar is my bird.
Today I believe I, and Oscar had a break through in our relationship.
Oscar was sitting on his play stand and I wanted to pick him up. In the past I have needed to get "the stick" for him to step up ( he will fight a little ) then he will step up onto my finger with no problem. No stick, bite guaranteed.
So today here he was sitting there and I wanted to pick him up.
I pondered how could I be calm assertive in this situation? He is fast and if I move fast at him I will scare him.
Well, I just heard this voice "Grab his tail, then put your finger out to get him to step up"
So, that is what I did and it worked like a charm.
This has been my goal for a long time and today I was able to practice this with him.
He is such a sweet bird.

Grabbing that long tail will certainly throw him off balance, or at least give you the chance to do so.

Is this the only time he bites?

Do you have a command for step up?

Also when you pick him up from the play perch does he go right into th cage?

Have a treat for him when he steps up and when you put him in the cage.

Keep in mind how short his legs are too.

When you have one foot you can gently hold it and roll your wrist towards you and move it under him. This will encourage confidence in his footing.

Glad you got him up without biting.
