hey, im new here and have a question. Ive just got a green cheek conure. He is about 5 months old and has been hand raised. He always wants attention and really doesnt mind being on my hand or shoulder at all. But he has a fasination with hair. He just cant leave it alone. little hairs on my neck or hands or arms. he will always lick them at first then start to bite. alot of the time biting very hard.

Anyone got any ideas how to stop this?? He also gets in his moods where he will try bite as he steps up. not just for balance or anything he will lean out and bite hard. But other times he is just perfect.

Ah yes, I'm new too and mine does the same. I think he's about the same age as your one and I've only had him for about 3 weeks. He also tries to bite the moles on my neck :S

All I do is just push his beak away when he does it. He starts again in a couple of minutes... I can't help you but I can sympathise!- Alex

Sounds like a "hairy" situation! :) ...ok that was bad.

But seriously, for the hair issue, I would just try blowing on him or unbalancing him by moving suddenly. Eventually, if you do this every time, he will start to get the picture.

As for the biting when coming up, some birds have more trouble balancing than others, and need to bite harder with their beak to get up on your hand. My St. Thomas conure is very clumsy and sometimes gives a decent nip to help him get up (not enough to be painful though). However, if he is biting very hard, then you should put him in time out for a few seconds on the floor. After those few seconds, offer to pick him back up again, and repeat if necessary.
