It's been well over a year since Chico the GCC was clipped; not only is he flying well, but he's flying better and with more confidence than he ever has in his life.
He is such a wonderful, fun, spoiled little brat! He loves the kitchen, making cooking and washing dishes FUN (he is not allowed in the kitchen when there are any uncovered dishes cooking on the stove, due to his intense curiosity about anything remotely foodlike). But otherwise, he usually whenever someone's in the kitchen, that's where he is to be found). I can turn on the water, and there he is on the faucet. Turn to open the flour jar and instantly there he is perched on the jar looking up at me. Sometimes I swear he can read my mind.
Like a little kid, he finds pots and pans to be better than toys. He can climb into a kichen cupboard and amuse himself for an hour. There's nothing cuter than a tiny 70 gram bird with a pie pan twice his size in his beak, banging it against the pots and pans and squealing with delight at the noise. (Best thing is since the cupboards are dark and nestlike, he won't go potty in them, so there's no mess).
He's still I think quite a subdued personality for a GCC, but for him, the change I've seen in the last 6 months is pretty dramatic. He has gone from being a quiet and depressingly well-behaved little bird to being a wonderful happy mischevious little brat, just full of curiosity and joy.

I have a section of cupboard set aside for Phoebe to play in, with an old phone book that she likes to chew on. It does get a little messy in there, but it's only paper shreds. :-)

how old is chico? our GCC kiwi is almost 1 year old and about 56 grams. but the personality of these little guys are amazing for their size! his primary flight feathers are starting to grow in after his first clipping, but even though he was clipped he is a very capable flyer!

Actually, he's about 7 years old. But he was never allowed to fledge as a baby so he never had a lot of confidence. After his flights grew in during his first year he could fly very well if he had to (if he fell or was startled badly) but just didn't have the confidence to fly much. You could hold a treat out a few feet away and he would beg and beg but be afraid to fly that far. I tried to help him gain confidence over the next few years and he was just starting to actually enjoy flying... when I took him to a new place to have his claws trimmed and turned away for a second, and they clipped his wings! And there went 5 years of work. It was very traumatic for him since he'd been flighted for years.
But he's back to being full flighted now, and is as playful and confident as he ever was. GCC's are such fun little birds.

I have heard a couple of similar stories about "complimentary" wing clipping at vets' offices. They made me paranoid about it so I always put "DO NOT CLIP WINGS" in two or three places on the questionnaire they give me, and ask to be in the same room with the bird and the vets the whole time, and so on. So far so good.

now kiwi's grown in maybe a third of the flight feathers he had clipped as a baby and the difference is very noticeable. as steve mentioned, he flew very well with clipped wings, but now he flies like a little rocket. he doesn't have to flap as fast, can make tight turns, and gains altitude very quickly. he used to just fly straight across the apartment, but now when he reaches the end of our narrow kitchen, he does a hairpin turn, buzzes the low coffee table and flies up to his window perch. he also seems more willing to come look for us when he can't see us. he's gonna be a handful :)
