Posted this on freeflight:

Came back from an airshow and we were eating pizza on the deck out back.

Bean was mooching food and hanging out. Flying back and forth to his perch on the deck and us. He went to fly to our friend who was over for the first time "Tom. Tom put his arm up and Bean decided to take a flyabout instead.

He did a minute flyabout over the neighbors trees and back. he landed about 40-50 feet up in the tree by the deck. By this time it was getting dark so it was pretty obvious he wasn't budging.

So I turned all the lights on in the house. He had his two perches outside, the truck and the roof which he lands on often.

I went out this morning and he was still in the same spot. Took about 20 minutes for it to get light enough and he flew down to the carport.

All is well. Interesting after 3 years of flying, how just the right circumstances can lead to staying outside.

Bean is presently glued to my shoulder as I type.

Glad this turned out OK. What sort of nasties do you have out at night there Jim?

Hmm,
What don't we have, day and night.

Owl. fox, racoon, crow, snake, hawks, eagles - including bald, condors, buzzards, wandering dogs...

Since we live on a lake we get it all.

Bald eaglewas here for at least a week last winter eating geese.

At least the boys run around in their battery powered jeep so it scares of some of the locals.

Welcome to the club.
i'm really glad he's home safe, sounds like he is too. Overnighters are no fun, but somehow less terrible to go through than worry about.

How often does he fly up that high? Do you think he got up there and thought, "dang, that's a looong way down..." ?

Nate,
He has been 100' up flying around. He flies over the trees that seperate our properties and they are 60-70 feet tall.

I am sure it was the time of night.

He wanted to do his little flyabout and didn't realize how close to dark it was until he was out of breath and in the tree.
