Was given a baby Indian ring neck about 5 6 weeks old, am feeding him ceralac (baby cereal) with a dropper is that the right thing to be feeding him,hes not biting and seems really happy to be out of his cage and on my shoulder as much as he is allowed! want to start teaching him good habits from day one instead of having problems later, has anyone any suggestions? thanks karonz

That's rice and might work. I would get s/him on a bird baby feeding formula.

Interaction without overloading. Let s/him have some alone time while little. This will help in independance.

If you're in the United States, you can probably find bird feeding formula at a pet store, especially if you can find a shop that specializes in bird stuff. Or you may be able to order it online - Kaytee Exact formula is pretty common and its what my birds were raised on.

As far as behavior and training and relationships stuff, the main thing to remember is that birds respond well to positive reinforcement (rewards for doing the right thing) but punishment almost never helps and usually has side effects that just make things worse. Figure out what the bird likes (head scratches, treats, attention, etc), and get into the habit of rewarding the bird every time it steps up or steps off your hand when you want it to, and so on.

If you click on the 'articles' link up above, and 'training' on the next page after that (it'll be further down the page) there are some articles that I think you will find helpful.

It's a bit difficult to train a bird that is still eating formula, and I'm not sure it's a good idea to interfere with the bird's feeding anyway. So at this stage just be nice to the bird and you can't go wrong. :-) The biggest rewards will be formula and time on your shoulder.

As the bird weans you can probably find more foods tht the bird likes. My baby pionus didn't seem to care for head scratches or anything like that until he was 6 months old, and I think he's still learning to like it more over time. All birds are different though...

Hi, well been in UAE 30 years and its changed so much, i would think the scuba diving is much better in your part of the world NZ and Aus. although there are many diving centres here,we have done the Padi courses here, alot of people go to Oman for diving, although the expacts here seem to enjoy the dives here and the desert safaris!!

Sorry, i posted a comment about diving but maybe in the wrong place!
Anyway diving here surley isn't as good as your part of the world, myself and husband have done the Padi courses here, there are many dive centres, not so much to see here under water, most people here seem to go to the Red Sea or the Far East for diving!! Although the desert safaris seem really popular! Been here 30 years and alot has changed, you should come ,its safe and plenty to do! Dont come in the summer months its tooooo hot but the winter here is wonderful!!

How old should my baby be before i introduce him to bird food, hes around 6 wks, his feathers are starting to fill in on his chest and hes started to attempt flying with a few nose dives! I think thats his age maybe he could be a little bit older! (Indian ring neck)

Hi, just read ur note about ring necks, you have better experience than me, i have one around 3 4 months old,he seems really friendly and has started to eat fruit and some of the mixed seed, as for noise i dont have a problem with that yet!! My friend has one which is older and its very noisey, but i think its their character.

Hi

I know this was an old post but was wondering how you were faring with your ringneck in Dubai. Did you manage to find a baby bird formula locally?

I live in Dubai too and am trying to find a breeder or dealer who can sell me any member of the parrot family young enough to hand rear. Most of the pet shops I've seen thus far shouldne't be allowed to keep birds!
