I have two sun counures that I have hand raised and have been working with them using Chris Biro's methods from the freeflight list and I have to say it has been great fun and works extremely well! Yesterday was a beautifull sunny mdiwinter day so I decided to go to the next level in the training and go outdoors.

I set them up in their cage oustide for about half an hour to get used to the spot. Once I was happy with their body language and with my heart in my mouth I opened up the door and let them out. They flew right over to me and then I went straight into their normal training routine of having them fly back and fouth between me and a perch and then back and fourth between me and my 8 year old daughter. It went without a hitch so am looking forward to building on this!

We have had two more outdoor sessions now (plus at least two a day inside if we don't make it outside) and they both went well. The second was a little hair raising as it was quite windy. Both birds got caught in a gust, one ended up on the roof of the house and the other up in a tree. Just a little nerve racking when we were working on short A to B flights. Anyway, the one on the roof flew down perfectly when cued. The one in the tree was having too much fun and took a bit of coaxing but he came back within 10 minutes. The 3rd session went well with all flights performed as they were planned.

I love the free flight idea, but we have hawks here and I am deathly afraid of them getting or spooking my birds. Have you had any such issues.
