My African Grey has been a little on the quiet side the last few days...but she sometimes goes through her days where she likes to be left alone. In the 6 years I've had her, it's happened once a year or so. So, naturally I didn't think anything of it, she was active, eating, and looking just fine.
This morning I woke up and as I do every morning, checked on all the fur babies, and I found her on the bottom of her cage She was laying on her stomach like she was trying to perch, but her legs wouldn't hold her. I opened the cage right away and checked it out, she was alert and moving only her head. Her legs were like mush. I put her bowl of water next to her and tried to perch her on it, and she perched for about 10 seconds and then fell over, but I caught her. I took her out and tried to give her some water and take a closer look. My boyfriend and I were deciding if we should take her to an emergency vet, as this was 5am this morning. As I was sitting there looking at her and holding her I could tell she was getting worse by the minute :(
I looked up at him, and told him that if we drove her to the emergency vet, I don't think she would last that much longer, and I didn't even know if the emergency vet near our house knew much about birds, so I would rather she passed comfortable in my arms in her home, not under stress in the car or antying. So I just held her and watched her pass. She couldn't even hold her head up within 10 minutes. She was just moving her eyes staring at me. Her heart started to beat faster and faster, and then it started to slowly beat, but beating a bit hard. Then she threw her head back, and tensed up. After that she put her head back in my hand and no more then a minute her heart stopped, and she passed away. I feel lost, confused, and very hurt. I don't know what happened to my baby girl?? She was so healthy and happy. Just the other day she was eating her favorite treat, peanuts. Sunday night I filled up her food bowls with her usual sunscription seed and zupreem, as I call them, "fruit loops". Nothing in her diet changed, the only thing in the house that has changed is, after Thanksgiving we did our christmas decorating, put the tree and everything. Any avian experts out there that might have an idea what happened to Kira??
