you might want to check about the peanuts, it is my understanding these are not good for amazons.

I have a BFA named Dotcom who I adopted approx 3 months ago. I have known him for a year.
Although he has had numerous tests done by avian certified vets, the reason for his handicap is not known.
He wobbles, cannot fly, and has a crooked spine.
He has a wild caught band.
I am at least his 3rd home (and final one I'd like to add).
He causes me continuous stress because he is a finicky eater. He will take food from my fingers and eats on his own .... just not as much as I think he should.
He doesn't speak but vocalizes and is quite a character.
He hates to be touched and has bitten me a few times.
He also sits on top of the cage of an eclectus who is with me in palliative care and he is rather protective of her.
These 2 birds have known each other for 3 years (having been in the same quarantee room together).

Forgive me, but what does 'palliative' mean?

she was given a very poor prognosis and is not expected to live very long
I have filed that away and treat her like a very much alive ekkie who loves her food and keeps the rest of the crazy house in line

Hi Loki,

This is new information for me. Can you tell me more about this? Where did you get this information? My Vet didn't say anything about this when I brought my DYH Amazon to her. Really curious now as I have been treating with peanuts.????

Thanks for your input

the peanut thing is interesting, could be a good thing to look into.
The vet that I used to go to did not like the idea of seeds or nuts of any kind other than in small amounts as a treat but in particular peanuts just because of the sheer size of them, one peanut is adds up to quite a few sunflower seeds.
I vaguely remember being told something about some species being more sensitive than others to fatty foods so in his view it was a good idea to be careful with all your birds about what they eat since as long as you keep them fed they won't ever be in need of the high calories anyway.
the analogy used was that peanuts and seed with parrots are pretty much like potato chips are to us.

I had a green cheek am that we got from some poor caretakers, had her covered all day in too small of a cage and would only eat peanuts and sunflower seeds.
It took awhile to get her to eat much else, but once she decided she liked other things and got used to us she would eat anything other than pellets, she never would touch those.
She was a charater the first bond she made in this house was with a doberman that we had, about three days after she came here and before we had a better cage for her, she would escape at night, anyway one moring I woke up and walked out of my room to her sleeping on the arm of the chair that the doberman was sleeping in, this really scared me thinking that if the dog woke up we would have problems.
I went over and was trying to scoop her up she decided to run over his back, he woke, looked at her and put his head back down.
After a couple years of them having in contact by accident, we would let them be in the same room and interact without worring about it, they both really seemed to enjoy each other, after awhile he started sleeping in the room that she was in below her cage and sometimes on his back.
She was always a bird that really had a hard time with change for example if you moved anything in the room that she lived in she would be upset for a few days, when the doberman died she was upset for quite awhile was so loud, she was screaming more than the conure that we have here which is allot.
About a year later she started to limp and did not like to have one of her legs touched, it turned out to be cancer and she died a few months later.

I have never met a amazon of any kind I have not liked, I can't say the same for some other species but I am way off topic so I will stop there:D
