I was recently given an african grey. I love him to death but I can't handle him. I can scratch his head through the cage and if I'm careful I can pet his back inside the cage. I would love to be able to get him to step up and eventually not try to bite me. He really tries to bite if he feels out of his comfort zone. He hasn't been held in probably 3 years. I leave his cage while I'm home and the farthest he usually goes is to the door but last night he got onto the floor. I'm worried i scared him because he was out of his comfort zone and i had to try to use a dowel to get him back in. You can't shoo him, he looks at you like you're stupid. He's definitely not afraid of people just objects, like the dowel. Any suggestions would be helpful . Thanks!

I hope somone with more experience answers this. With sensitive birds like Greys, it is important not to frighten them. You don't know how he was treated in the past. If he is afraid of dowels, try taking a perch he likes from the cage (or use a perch that looks like a cage perch) for him to step onto. And do not go after him when he flutters to the floor. Give him a minute to figure out he's ok and then offer the perch a few feet away so he can come over and get on it to get off the floor.
