Hello,
Where can I buy a mosquito-proof container to ship my macaw from California to Hawaii? The State of Hawaii requires that she be shipped in a mosquito-proof container.
Does anyone have any ideas where I can buy this?
Thanks,

I don't really know for sure. You might want to ask some breeders.
The only bird carrier I know of that is both mosquito-proof and airline approved is this:

but of course is very expensive and much too small for a macaw, and their macaw-size carriers are designed as backpacks and look like they'd tip right over if set down.

Hi,
Thanks Karen. I asked the State of Hawaii to clarify what they meant by a mosquito-proof container. Now they say I can just cover her travel cage with mesh and tape it on the cage. I hope she gets enough air...do you think that will be a problem?

thydot,
I was wondering, have you moved to Hawaii yet with your bird? My husband (NAVY) recently got orders there and I am sooo nervous about shipping the bird. I have heard that no planes allow pets in the cabin to HI. How did you send your macaw? I would love any help or hints on the big move!

Hi Megan,
She was shipped on Hawaiian Airlines in the cargo hold. She was OK...had a water and food dish. The airline staff was very nice. We had a medium sized pet carrier fitted with a bar and taped over with mosquito netting.

There was a small problem before we left with one permit not being sent to us to we had it faxed to us.

We found a really good vet for the 7 day quarantine, that was important.

The flight from SF to Honolulu was only 5 hours so Puffer was OK.
Good luck to you and Luna.
