I got my lovebird from a friend just three days ago.They said they got the bird just last Christmas I don't exactly know how old he is,anyway they said he's a real nice bird he climbs on their shoulder and so on.

Now everytime I go near him he runs away.I follwed some advice and picked a specific time in the day where I would train him.They said to keep his cage out of sight so I did.I was really scared of getting bitten at first and used a stick to train him.He now likes being petted and climbs on, the stick.But when I try to touch him with my own fingers he gets scared and goes as far away as pssible from me.But with the stick he feels comfortable.I really want to create a bond with him but not through a stick.

How could I make him feel comfortable and not scared of me?

That's the whole point of stick training. The bird gets comfortable with the stick, you cut the stick shorter and shorter every couple of days and eventually he'll be comfortable with your hand as well.

Take your time. Also find treats he likes. Once he's out you can lure him closer to you with them.

I just bought some millet sprays either last Tuesday or Wednesday then I started offering it to him the next day as a treat only and he really likes it. I used it to lure back to his cage and it actually worked.Thanx for the advice though

Oh no! Perch or "stick" training makes things very difficult usually! By cutting the stick shorter and shorter, you're forcing the bird to trust you which just wont happen. You have to gain the bird's trust and "make friends" with it. If you don't believe me, think of it this way; yes, the bird will probably learn to step on your finger, but what about when you want to pet it, take it on trips, or teach it other tricks? The bird will never want to learn because it doesn't respond to YOU, it responds to the STICK and the stick can't teach it anything! Start out by just feeding him treats through the bars of his cage-it seems like you're backtracking a lot, but it will be worth it, I promise. When he isn't afraid of your fingers, open the door and put your hand inside to feed him treats. After a few days of that, hold a treat in one hand and put a finger from your other hand above his feet. Feed him the treat. Once he isn't afraid of that finger near him, hold the treat far away so that he has to jump on your finger to reach it. Do this for a few days, and then start saying "step up" and "good girl/boy" when you want it to step up and once it does step up. Now only give it the treat every OTHER time it steps up. Then every 4 times, then you can just use verbal praise for the rest of the time. Your bird is now trusting and finger trained.
