With my birds (3 parrots) if one of them gets too rough I will use a time out of sorts. What I usually do is put them down, turn my back and not say a word for a few seconds. Birds a smart. They learn quick and will learn that what they have done to invoke the punishment is wrong. Personally I wouldn't leave them in their cage the whole day as a punishment but yes it is ok for time outs.

I have another question I want to buy my bird a female partner.Is it okay to buy a new bird for him?.Do I have to follow some steps and other stuff?.Or is it okay if I put the new bird in the cage with my present bird?..

I'm not too familiar with Love Birds but I would say that if you want to handle him don't add another bird to the cage. Birds will bond to each other when in a cage with others. they will then look at you as an outsider and become much more difficult to handle in most cases.

Time outs can work if a bird is biting or being difficult, but giving him a time out in his cage as punishment for being hard to get in his cage will not work at all. It will just make it more difficult to get him in his cage in the future as he will associate getting put in his cage with being punished. You should instead try to make going to his cage enjoyable, maybe by leaving a favorite treat in there, or doing some trick training like you described.

Lovebirds are one of the most difficult birds to keep in pairs if you want them tame. They tend to bond very strongly and can also be very aggressive. If you do get another, you should keep it seperate for at least a few weeks, both for quarantine and to allow you time to tame each one seperately. And they need to be introduced carefully and slowly and watched for aggression.

Thanks guys I'll do exactly what you said.My bird has been trying to bite me if I pet him or go to his cage really fast but when I go to his cage in a slow motion way he doesn't bite me or anything he just stays there watching my every move.Yesterday while he was flying around he got hungry andI put some millet on the table near me.He went close to me and he didn't try to attack me but when I try to pet him he flies away do I have to clip his wings to make him used to this or just go near him and try to pet him even if he flies away,or he just doesn't like being petted.Thanks for the tips guys.

Some birds don't like to be petted and I think it's better to respect that. Sometimes when they become more trusting this will change and they will devide they want to be petted, and some just never like it. I have a budgie who hates being petted, but in every other way he is very tame and sweet, loves to be held and is always eager to fly over when called.

Anyway, I would just work on getting him to step up for now. Let him see you are ok and fingers are ok. Do not try to pet him like a dog or cat or reach down from above. That's too much like a predator for a bird who is not very tame. If you really want to pet him, approach him slowly from the front and with one finger, gently scratch the feathers on his cheek or chin. If he likes this, you can try slowly moving your hand around so you are scratching his neck. Some birds who do not trust hands much do better if you start by scratching them with one of their own molted feathers rather than your finger.

You don't have to clip his wings. You say he doesn't fly away if you approach quietly. That is good. Ideally for training you don't want to ever frighten him enough to make him want to fly away from you (though he will likely want to fly around a bit for fun and exercise). Clipping wings may make it easier to approach him, in that he can't fly away if he feels threatened, but he will learn to trust you better if you try not to make him feel threatened anyway.

Clipping is a personal decision. It can be good for really panicky untame birds who could hurt themselves flying away. But flying is good for their health and confidence. Clipping is just temporary of course.

Him trying to attack you when you try to pet him is just in defense I would guess. It sounds like he is still a little scared of you, so give him time. Do you know much about how he was raised/treated before you got him?

If you've done something to scare him it is very possible that you're starting from scratch. I always tell people to take things slow. Trust me I love to give love and affection to my pets but with our birds it just starts as holding......then giving a treat.....to trying a scratch. You can see how comfortable your bird is when you're doing things to him. My CAG for example is always nervous so we pay close attention to his body language and his eyes. Our B&G for example is still very very young so he takes to new experiences with ease. Just take it slow, think of it as an investment....take the time now for a long and great relationship down the road. You may find that the bird only needs a few weeks and he's comfortable with you. Our Eclectus was like that. She was a little hesitant and bit a little when we first got her, a few weeks later everything was ok. On the flip side our CAG has been with us for 6 months now and he's just over the past 2 weeks gotten to where he'll let me scratch on the top of his head and just barley down his neck.

As Loyalty said, just go slow. Toweling or restraining a shy bird will not help. He will learn to trust you if you are patient with him.
Now, he may never become tame enough to want to be cuddled or petted a lot. If he was never handfed or otherwise handled when younger, it just might be too late for him to learn to enjoy that. He will probably learn to enjoy a head scratch, and can be taught tricks of course. Trick training is one of the best ways to gain trust.

Personally, I wouldn't clip wings. If he isn't really panicking, just trying to avoid you sometimes, you can work with that. He doesn't fly away if you apporach him slowly and calmly, so do that. With clipped birds who can't get away it can be tempting to be a little less careful and accidentally frighten him. With budgies (who usually come parent raised and not tame) clipped birds will learn things like step up sooner, but will take longer to really trust and bond with their owners, because their 'escape route' is gone and they are more stressed.

Great advice! As she said respect his mood. If he's scared you'll see it in his eyes, body language (a lot of times birds will look around a lot, moving the head quickly looking for an escape route) and ruffled feathers. For example if you're giving a scratch and you see that, slowly put your hand down and just sit there and talk to him. Also giving treats as I'm sure we've mentioned before is a huge help.

Also as far as your comment about the petstores and clipping wings. I'm assuming you meant to say that they wouldN'T do it. I'm a manager at PetCo and we aren't technically allowed to clip customers birds wings either. It's a liability issue. I've been a bird person for quite sometime and I still won't clip wings by myself. Try a vets office. My vet charges $14 to clip wings & nails. Also if you have a small mom and pops pet store in the area if they are experienced with birds they will probably clip them for you.

Thanx guys I think he's former owned him since he was a baby.He's just 8 months that's what they said.My mom said if you go to the vet it'll cost you lots of money I didn't know it was just $14.00.But I don't know I've never heard of Petco.Well I'll try to find out more.

PetCo is a national chain just like PetSmart.....well I may be going too far assuming you're in the US though. Wing clipping shouldn't be very expensive no matter where it's done.
