Good morning. I am currently owned by a 10 year old female Umbrella cockatoo, named Ellie, and just as of 3 days ago I am now owned by an 8 year old male B&G Macaw, named Teal. I have large bird experience especially with My Ellie (U2), but my questions is I see such a huge difference in personality (duh I know they are all different) mannerisms and DOMINANCE between Ellie and Teal. When I got Ellie of course she was scared her whole world was turned upside down, but in the honeymoon phase she never made a sound hardly, pretty much wouldn't come out of her cage etc. Now she is roaming the house, steps up, very interactive with me. But that also took months and months.
My question is...Teal same situation very, very scared and confused, definitely misses home I am sure, but he is very vocal, very inquisitive and just much more bold and out going. He is biting so he hasn't been out of his cage yet till I get some ace bandages to wrap my arm up with for protection. Oh also I am his first rehome. Someone told me he can "smell" fear? I knew dogs could, but not birds. is this true? I haven't shown him fear yet, but his beak is also very over grown so he could actually do more damage than the average Macaw till I get him to the vet.
Any suggestions? I sing to him, just sit by the cage and talk to him, read books, and sometimes just be down right silly with him. Are most macaws very bold, pushy and outgoing as he is?
I now know how is old mommy talked to him, her son, and the other pets as I heard sooo many phrases last night from him. My favorite so far he says "for the love of God"! I cracked up on that one, and also "NO, my food is hot".
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know also it will take TIME, TIME, TIME, AND MORE TIME!
Thanks for listening!
Mandy
