Hello. I'm thinking about getting a Cockatiel. I have been doing some research on the internet and learning as much as I can. However, I want to hear from YOU- experienced and loving Cockatiel owners. Please share with me why you love your Cockatiel, and what makes these birds special. :)

they are so sweet! they are bigger than budgies but cant really talk much but thedo whistle. I love their crest they way it perks up when they hear a weird noise or something. they are a whole lot less shy than budgies so you dont spend so much time taming them. they can really get attached to you too and when they get to know you they will probly be a little cuddly. all in all I would reccomend getting a cockatiel as a first time bird.

I recently adopted two cockatiels for my daughter, as someone said they are good starter birds. I have Macaws and I have had them longer than my daughter has been with me. She is now getting to an age where she wants to have more responsiblities and she wants to be able to interact with the larger birds.

She is 7 and has had the cockatiels for just a few weeks, she is already handling them on her own(with supervision of course) and she is learning to read their moods and behaviors. She also has one that loves to kiss himself in the mirror and whistle.

They can learn to talk it just takes a little more training than other birds. I would also recommend looking for a cockatiel up for adoption that has had some handling. There are some many small birds at rescues and up for adoption that is pretty common to find ones that have been handled and have some training. This also makes them much more enjoyable right from the start especially for the new bird owner. You can avoid the frustrations of having to learn how to train a bird. There is more involved than simply sticking your hand in the cage and grabbing the bird. This works to get them out but does not really teach anything.

As with any pet, please make sure you are commited to keeping the pet through good and bad and please once you get your bird ask questions read posts keep doing what you are doing right now. Also do not get discouraged if you do ask a question and you get useless and rude replies, I hate to say it but their are people out there that like to post there 2 cents even though it has nothing to do with actually answering your questions.

Just keep asking, we, the people who really want to help will find your posts and help you find the answers even if we do not have them ourselves.
