We have a 4 yo very headstrong Male Sun Conure and are considering getting a female Green Cheek as a friend... are we going in the right direction... we don't want to breed as we live on a boat... are there any known problems with pairing an Aratinga with a Pyrrhua ?????

Getting a friend for a bird is not like getting another dog to keep the one you already have company.

First there is no promise that the two birds will ever get along, you cannot bring the new bird home and immediately place him with the one you already have. You have to introduce them slowly. You will need to have two cages so even if they become friends if one starts picking on the other you can seperate them.

ALso sometimes adding a second bird will make both of them want nothing to do with you, or it will make one very jealous when you pay attention to the other. You will not be able to leave them together unsupervised for quite some time. You do not want to risk a fight between them.

I have 5 macaws they all tolerate eachother and some of them can be placed together on the same playstand. But they all get very jealous when someone gets picked up, they sit and wait for their turn sometimes not very patiencely or quietly. They will fight occasionally and they are all caged seperately. At some point I might have two that could share a cage but we are not to that point yet.

I got two cockatiels for my daughter since she is not big enough to play with my birds. They came together and get along pretty good, but only one likes to be handled and the other does not like it when we take his friend away. I am working on socializing the one so they can both be handled but again it takes time and work.

Just be prepared for what might happen, you could get the second bird and they might hate each other than you have to do twice as much work and have twice as much time to pay attention to them.

No matter what it will take time to get them to like eachother and you will need to keep the new bird seperate from yours for a couple weeks and make sure the new one is vet checked, either get a copy of current records or take him to a vet yourself. you want to make sure he is not going to pass anything onto your current bird.

Good luck let me know if you have any more questions

Good luck and no matter what you decide if you enjoy having one bird adding a second will just bring you more enjoyment even if they never become friends.
