Hello everyone,

I'm new to the community. I've had a cockatiel since Jan. and we just recently purchased a Nanday Conure. I was ordering new toys and food for them and wondered if the vitamins and minerals they sell are something I should order as well. Any advice on things to purchase for the Conures health would be greatly appreciated. He has a broken toe but I don't think it is a recent break. Thanks for the advice.

I meant to add .... is it possible to be allergic to the conures? I've been sick since we got him and I'm afraid to handle him much since I don't want him to get sick as well. Is there any testing they can do to determine if you are allergic to a certain type of bird?

To be honest, it is more likely to be allergic to the cockatiel than the conure. Cockatiels have powder down feathers - special feathers that grow continously and break off into small pieces (feather dust), used in keeping the feathers clean. Conures don't have them.
But allergies to pets usually take awhile to develop - it takes awhile for the allergen to accumulate to levels that affect you. If it is fairly sudden, then the cause is more likely to be something else, maybe a flowering plant.
Oh, also if you are using a bedding in cagesm, especially cedar or corncob, that can cause allergies. It is best to just use newspaper.

If your new conure is on a diet of mostly pellets, then extra vitamins or minerals could be harmful- pellets have enough already. If he is eating seeds and fresh foods (like veggies) then he may need some additional vitamins/minerals. Get a kind that is added to fresh foods, not the water. Most water-based supplements have sugar in them and can cause the water to spoil quickly.

Definitely more likely to be an allergy to the cockatiel not the conure. I have both & have allergies to the tiel, not my sun. Just keeping the tiels area clean is about all you can do.

Being sick since you had the conure is more likely just a coincidence or even the right time of year for allergy sufferers.

You can buy good quality conure pellets (natural) plus buy fruit & veg for him to eat daily. Sprout & 24 hour soaked seed can give your conure the vits he needs daily,

plus you can add a mineral block to his cage & perch. My conure doesn't touch her mineral block so I grate it into her cooked meal about once a week.

High vit K for your conure too like dark leafy green veggies, kale, broccoli, bok choy etc...
