I have a 13 week baby CAG that is not fledged yet, so the bottom of the cage is padded with towels in case she falls while climbing. She gets in the corners of the cage an digs and digs, and I've read that babys do this and that they probably will outgrow it. Do any of you know why they dig? Do they outgrow it? Or does it matter?

Thanks,
Nikki

Nikki:

I think it's just a grey thing. I wouldn't worry about it. Phinney is eight and on occassion she still scratches....but mostly it's because she wants out of the cage. As soon as she starts scratching, I react and let her out (can't stand it)....so, she's taught me to let her out when she does it....pretty smart.

I am sure there is some instinctual nesting thing going on....but who knows?

Thx

Phoebe a pionus, not a grey, but she does that sometimes. Not in her cage, but in blankets on my bed or in a cardboard box that I gave her to play in (some birds don't behave well when given boxes to play in, but Phoebe was fine).

So, I vote "doesn't matter." I think it's kinda cute actually.

My CAG Jacky does that sometimes too. Mostly in the spring and early summer. I also think it's cute;) In one of her articles Pam Clark writes about it and says that it relates mostly to CAGs maturing - i.e. seems to be a nesting behavior. At the same time CAG breeders say that scratching is a common behavior that every baby CAG does. So, whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about and yes, I vote "doesn't matter" too.

Hi Nikki,
I have an 8 year old sexed female TAG that does digs all the time. She does it mostly when she sees me and wants to get out. I don't always get her out when she does it so it is not a reinforced behavior. Instead it must be some kind of natural behavior. I too think it is cute.

My 8 year old female CAG does it all the time. I've read that it's a natural behavior that they use that keeps their nests clean in the wild.
