Found this recipe and the birds love it. Doesn't look the greatest when it's made but the birds don't seem to mind.

3 or 4 cups corn meal
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup chopped nuts (peanuts, walnuts etc)
1 cup wheatgerm
1 cup dried fruit / raisins
2 cups frozen mixed veggies
2 to 3 eggs with shells (sterilize eggshells before use by boiling or microwaving about 5 min)
1 jar baby food
1 to 2 cups fresh chopped fruit
handful fresh chopped herbs
Left over veggies or safe food in fridge (tomato pieces, chopped spinach, capsicum, broccoli, carrots, brown rice, pasta, etc)
Chop everything up and mix together with enough V8 vegetable juice, fruit juice and milk to get a cake mixture consistency.

Bake in an oven pan at 180 C for about 30 mins

This is enough for a good sized pan full which you can then freeze and use when needed.

Hi,
I went shopping today, hoping to purchase some of the items for the birdie bread. However, when I looked at the v-8 juice, and fruit juices, I saw that they all contain some sodium and sugar. Also, I thought that birds could not digest dairy products. Please enlighten me, I am new to the bird world. I would like to bake this bread for my birdie, but don't want to take a chance in harming him. Help!

I'd like to understand more also because the CAG we are careing for loves dairy products more than anything Cheese, yogurt, ice cream, I don't see any negative results, but?

A little bit of sugar and/or sodium won't hurt, just don't go overboard and feed candy or stuff with added corn syrup. Basically, i it's health for you it's probably healthy for the bird too (except avocado, which I'm told is very dangerous).

As for dairy... Mammals can generally take dairy products with no trouble, since of course that's what baby mammals survive on at first. Birds on the other hand don't necessarily have the stomach enzymes to digest dairy products. I don't know what symptoms "lactose-intolerant" birds get. I've heard that some birds have trouble with dairy, but no details... I've not heard of birds getting seriously ill from dairy, but if you're concerned, talk with a vet. By the time I started to really wonder about this, I'd already found out (not thinking...) that my birds have no trouble with dairy; in fact they LOVE cheese. Darwin is really fond of yogurt, too.

On a related note, there's a soy-based fake cheese product available at grocery stores in my area, it comes in flavors that are almost identical to swiss, american, cheddar, or provolone, and my birds love that stuff too.

In one of my issues of Bird Talk there was an advertisement for some expensive special blend food for birds and I was surprised to see that one of the ingredients was "yogurt covered soynuts". So apparently dairy products in small amounts isn't that harmful and maybe the benefit they get from the seed is the important thing.
I have tried soynuts for a snack myself and they taste pretty good. The only problem I had was that they are fairly hard in texture and you have to have a good set of teeth to enjoy them LOL! I doubt the birds would have any problems there tho!

I've heard that yogurt is not bad for birds, because in the process of making milk into yogurt, it loses most of its lactose

Would this recipe be safe for budgies?
