I've never heard of glossy cockatoos. Got any links?

I think the Glossy cockatoo is also known as the Glossy Black cockatoo
(Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus)

The info here is about the recovery plan for the species -

Went to talk by Dr Stark and he stumped me with a simple picture of a juvenile Illigers Macaw (I knew better)

That started me looking for rare birds.

JT - Are you saying that the GC is different than the GBC?

Black Cockatoo (Southeastern and extreme southwestern Australia; Tasmania)
Calyptorhynchus fumereus (baudinii, funereus, latirostis, xanthanotus)
Brownish black; 65 cm / 26 in, >65 cm / 26 in, 58 cm / 23.2 in, 58 cm / 23.2 in; Clutch: 1-2; Incubation days: 28-30

Glossy Cockatoo (Extreme eastern Australia)
Calyptorhynchus lathami (None)
Male: Black; Female: Brownish black; 48 cm / 19.2 in; Clutch: 1; Incubation days: 29

I got this info from -

http://www.innvista.com/science/zoology/domestic/cockatoo.htm

I know the Black Cockatoo and the Glossy Cockatoo are different but, nearly everything I have read about the Glossy says 'also know as' the Glossy Black Cockatoo.

Now I'm confused!! :0

Glossy = Green

They do look somewhat similar though.

Let me confuse things even more :)
I have a copy of the 3rd ed. of "Australian Parrots" by Joseph Forshaw, 2002.
(BTW Fantastic book with stunning illustrations!)

The Glossy Black (Calyptorhynchus lathami Temminck) is also known as the Glossy, Leach's Black, Leach's Red-tailed, Latham's or the Casuarina Cockatoo.

Forshaw has adopted a classification of 3 subspecies (with great reservation), as they only vary in size and shape of bill. If you want their Latin names, let me know.

In general parlance, when someone speaks of "black cockatoos" one would generally think of a group of black cockatoos, which includes the Glossy, Palm, Red-tailed black (Calyptorhynchus banksii Latham), Yellow-tailed black (Calyptorhynchus funereus Shaw) and the White-tailed black/Carnaby's Black Cockatoo (Calyptorynchus latirostris Carnaby).
There is another White-tailed black/Baudin's black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus baudinii Lear)

Hope that helps :)

Cool! I learned something new today. I gotta say, the birds in the pictures Debbi linked to look pretty glossy to me... I didn't know cockatoos could be glossy, with all the powder they give off.
