When I recieved my cockatiel at 3 months old, he had a deformed toenail. It was extremely short and looked as tho it was stubby, and was growing extememly slow...... Well now, it is longer and it seems that he has no feeling in the toe at all and the nail is growing sideways and looks as tho it is discolored. His toenail has never looked like that before. It isnt overgrown so I am sure the vet cannot trim it or anything..... What could be wrong? Should I be concerned?

I would not be concerned. Toe and toenail deformation are not unusual in pet birds. It's typically caused by parents "grooming" their feet too aggressively. My RV2 Darwin has odd nails on all of his forward-facing toes. Three of them grow straight (no curvature) and one of them is barely there at all - occasionally it grows a tiny sliver just 3-4 millimeters but the sliver breaks off often. Doesn't seem to bother him at all though.

I believe my bird was not around its parents, it was hand fed. Does that usually mean that they arent around its parents? I am not 100% posative if the birds are around their parents when the are hand fed b/c my bird was given to me when he was 3 months old. Lately I have been noticing that he gets aggrivated and bites that foot alot. I mean he did that before too but I never realized it was just that one foot he did it with until my mom pointed it out to me....... Should I have his aviary vet check it out?
