Seeking "teaching to talk" or similar mp3/CD

Posted by jimbobbrown on Mon, 04/16/2007 - 14:55 :: Teaching Tricks
Does anyone have a "teaching your bird to talk" (or simply teaching to make sounds/whistle) CD or set of mp3 files? We are trying to train two cockatiels. If you do have such, and could/would rip the CD or share the mp3 files, and share via RapidShare, MediaFire, Pando, or other, it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact me privately at jimbobbrown@wrestlingwarrior.com

Basic training

Posted by csdax on Sun, 05/07/2006 - 14:54 :: Teaching Tricks
I've had my 8 mth old cockatiel for 4 days now, and I think the training is going okay. As I'm new to this, though, I'd like to get some feedback on how I'm doing and get advice on a few things.

We've only really been working on 'up' so far. I put my fingers near him, and say 'up' and if he steps up I immediately click my tongue and give him a sunflower seed. Sometimes he'll do it right away, other times he'll just back away from me completely (especially if he's in his cage). I try tempting him with sunflower seeds, where he has to step onto my hand to reach them, but if he doesn't want to come to me, he'll just ignore them. In this situation, I usually get a piece of dowel, which he'll step onto about 80% of the time, compared to my 40% with my finger. In this situation, should I persist with trying to get him on my finger, or should I leave him?

Birds on the shoulder?

I read somewhere that when trying to tame your parrot, you should never let them sit on your shoulders. The article stated that the bird should be below your eye level, not at eye level with you because the bird will feel superior to you.

Found clickers in Oz! Good souce of clickers for Aussies!

Hi all, I found a great place for clickers!

I am now awaiting the arrival of my clicker in the post - probably come tomorrow or the next day - yippee!

Of course none of my local retailers had ever heard of a clicker but after some net searching I found this lovely woman who sells them. She will accept a direct account deposit for all of you out there like me with no credit cards. They cost $3 each plus postage. Her website is www.puppypower.net (yes, they are intended for dogs, but same thing right?). So any other Aussies with clicker finding problems - go there!
