I recently set up to adopt a mustache parakeet named Sammy (a 3 yr old girl) from a rescue place. the people gave her up due to crowding & lack of time. I lost my cockateil recently & then I came across Sammy on the net & contacted them. she talks a bit & is a little skittish at first but very sweet. now I cannot wait until I can go get her (after the holidays)...I am going to use my 'teil cage for now, but plan on upgrading soon...

What are Alexandrines like as pets?

I am considering another bird to add to my "flock". I was considering a male ekkie until my galah died. Then thought about another cockatoo. so I am tossing between a sulfer crested (which I have owned before) a rose breasted 'too (my girl passed away just over 2 months ago) a major mitchell, a male ekkie or an alexandrine.
A question about my parakeet Salt....
Posted by Autumnleaf on Sat, 06/25/2005 - 20:00 :: Psittacula
My parakeet Salt makes weird noises at night sometimes. They sound somewhat like sneakers sqeaking against tile. I looked in my books and I couldn't find anything about her problem. Does anyone know what could be going wrong with her?

Hello, I have a female powder blue Indian Ringneck named Isis - and I just love her. She's one of my best friends BUT we are having some problems and I don't know what to do. She screams ALL THE TIME. And no I'm not exaggerating.

There is an aviary near my house, which houses ringnecks, blossom headed parakeets, lovebirds, budgies, a mynah, and something else that looks a lot like a mynah but is petrol-blue and has a big yellow eye. (Well, two, but you can normally only see one at a time.) They all seem to get along ok, but I'm wondering how well ringnecks get along with other birds in the home environment. I'd love to have more birds, and I do like smaller birds such as budgies, lovebirds and cockatiels. Now that Bok Bok and Kiwi are separated due to Kiwi constantly kicking his @ss, I'm thinking of getting him a companion. Does anyone have any experiences they can share?
new to forum need feeding advice

I have just registered for this site, so please forgive any faux pas I may commit. I have a beloved Quaker(Mickey) who has the gift of being Perfect in Every way that matters. I now also have an 11 week old indian ringneck named Merlin. My Merlin is sweet as pie and twice as tasty. I make this assumption based on the fact that every animal(and there are a bunch here) wants to eat him. He and Mickey get along very well, but I do know not to leave them unsupervised! Their personalities are so very different, I'm having a great time! Yes, I know tons un necessary info. What I'm looking for is diet recommendations for my sweet little ringneck Merlin. He's pretty much off handfeeding and eats pellets and some seeds and food off my plate which is bird friendly(pretty much anything I eat is bird friendly because I like to share with my birds:) Any suggestion/ recommendations are welcome!!

Phoebe, my pionus, hardly every chews on stuff, and when she does, there's little or no damage. She doesn't need much direct attention, she just likes to hang out in the same room (preferably on my shoulder). Darwin, my cockatoo, chewed the doorframe off the birdroom, and is now busily pulling up the carpet. He needs direct attention to be happy, otherwise he makes a fuss.
Taming new birds (or not, as in my case)

Hello all, I'm new on this forum, just thought I would ask if anyone has any tips on taming new birds. I have a pair of Ringneck parakeets, mature, although I'm not sure how old exactly. I got them three weeks ago, but despite my continued efforts, they don't want anything to do with me.

Is there a better word than 'psittacula' to describe these species? It's the only one I know of, but it's odd to refer to a group by its genus rather than a more common name. I think pionus and poicephalus might be the only other groups commonly known by their latin names - and I'm not too sure about poicephalus, either... If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks...
