Hi there. my husband and I bought a sun conure around Christmas of 2005. She was very sweet and good natured. A few months ago our good friend was evicted and we decided to let his two birds stay with us. They had been caged together for a long time and got along. After a while, I put all three of them together because they seemed to get along. There has never been any sign of trouble between them. Today when I was on my way out of the house, I found two of the birds dead. It looks like they have been partially eaten. My husband said all of the birds were alive when he left for work this morning. There were no other animals in the house. It looks like the bird that is left must have killed and eaten the other two. But, there were no noises coming from the birds this morning! If they had been fighting it seems like I would have heard something. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? I am just completely confused as to how this could have happened. I was around all morning and didn't hear anything unusual.

Well, I know what happened now. A rat killed them. I just found the droppings. Sorry for ruining everyone's day with this post.

I still can't believe this happened in the middle of the day when I was just feet away and didn't hear anything. I'm wondering if my husband isn't mistaken about seeing them this morning and maybe it happened last night while we were asleep.

Welcome to FF
Sorry to hear this. How did a rat get into the cage?

The cage was open. We had forgotten to close it the night before.

I feel that I have to say - this is the only time we have ever forgotten to close it and cover them up. I went to put my daughter to bed and fell asleep and I guess my husband fell asleep in the chair and went up to bed later.

My husband saw them when he left at 6:30 am and figured it was ok to leave them since it was morning. We usually let them bop around out there during the day. My daughter and I got up at 8:30 and went about our daily routine getting ready for school. I found them on our way out the door.

That is very unfortunate...

You didn't mention if one of the birds dead was your sun conure. I hope it was not, but if it was, my condolences.

Why was there a rat in the house if you have no other pets? Very sorry to hear about the birds...
